Shirley Sterling based this novel on her own experiences as an
aboriginal student at the Kamloops Indian Residential School. It is
written in the form of a journal, recording the experiences of a
student at the school in the 1950s. Hearing the voice of "Seepeetza"
on the CD as she talks about her inspiration for writing the songs she
sings gives the students a strong connection to the author.
Shi-shi-etko complements Seepeetza as it describes the last days at
home of a child before being taken to residential school.
