Synopsis Some atmospheric pollutants increase the acidity of rain. These gases emitted by motor vehicles and industry form acids when combined with the water vapor in clouds. Winds transport these acids far from the source and fall as acid rain or snow which has harmful effects. Acid precipitation harms plants, impoverishes the soil and infiltrates the water table acidifying lakes and harming animal life in them. In 1974 rain as acid as lemon juice fell in Scotland.
